FROM SHRINKING CITIES TO RURAL DREAMS

The following article is part of a new review, DOUBLE HAPPY: (8+8=19) Views on Architecture in Finland and China, published yesterday by Newly Drawn and OK Do. Double Happy brings together an international group of practitioners who wish to stir up the architectural discourse in the two countries – and beyond. It includes stories that reflect various facets of placemaking, juxtaposing Finland and China, and is available both in English and Chinese. I was invited by OK Do to write for the publication about the potentials and realities of the Finnish urban conditions.

THE QUIET REVOLUTION OF GREEN TRAVEL

While our modes of consumption are becoming more sustainable and slow lifestyles are gaining interest, also the ways we travel are finding new forms. The cure to travel fever might be closer than you think: exploring the neighboring small town, spending a day in the forest or taking the local train to a suburb you’ve never been to. Even in long distance travel, it is possible to choose the slower and more sustainable option. Taking the train turns the journey itself part of the holiday. And, well, flying is not always even the fastest option. As a coincidence, while writing this text, the erupting Icelandic Eyjafjallajökull volcano is causing havoc and canceling all air travel in North and Central Europe. (more…)

IN SEARCH OF RURAL DREAMS

During the Easter weekend, Urban Dream Management had a chance to do a bit of local travel, driving through small countryside towns of Central Finland. In the foggy weather of early spring, the landscapes were quiet and meditative, not many people in sight. Yet, the grey-brown, melancholic sceneries had a strange, inspiring and soothing effect.
