A DOME OF UMBRELLAS

The DUS Architects are continuing their urban guerilla acts in the Netherlands with success: after last summer’s Gecekondu house built of “china bags” they have launched another structure using common yet unusual building materials: the Bucky Bar – a temporary dome made of umbrellas.

The Bucky Bar, launched last Friday, is the first in a series of five “unsolicited positive proposals“ for the future of the city of Rotterdam, which the DUS have started in collaboration with the Studio of Unsolicited Architecture, a new initiative of the Netherlands Architecture Institute.

OPEN CITY: R’DAM BIENNALE

If you are planning to visit the Netherlands during the winter, it should be warmly recommended to visit the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). Under the theme “Open City”, the IABR presents three exhibitions and an extensive side program of events such as lectures, film screenings, debates and workshops. This year, the biennial invades the streets, museums and docklands of both Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and is open until 10 January 2010. (more…)
