WINTER AT THE HIGH LINE

During the early 2011, Urban Dream Management has been busy exploring and writing less. In February, I had the chance to spend a month flâneuring the streets of New York, where spring was making its first attempts to beat the cold weather.

Among the first things on my list in New York, was a long-anticipated visit to the High Line, a public park built on an abandoned elevated railroad stretching from the Meatpacking District to the Hudson Rail Yards in Manhattan. I saw the park in its quiet, snow-covered winter mood and returned there on a sunny afternoon at the end of the month, when it was packed with people spending their weekend. The park design features an integrated landscape, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Field Operations. It combines meandering concrete pathways with naturalistic plantings that draws its inspiration from the beauty of the original biodiversity that took over after the railroad fell into a ruin. Walking along the streets of New York in the end of October you can not miss the crazy-funny-whimsical Halloween arrangements people decorate their homes with.

This is only a small selection of different decoration styles and ideas I spotted on a recent weekend promenade along the streets of the New York´s BoCoCa district in Brooklyn (Boerum Hill – Cobbel Hill – Carrol Gardens). (more…)

BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK

[Brief Notes from New York #1]

The new Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the many reasons why New York should truly be considered a city committed on improving the living qualities of its inhabitants. The park is being constructed on a former industrial port area, and now gradually opening. Piers 1 and 6 of the public park have been opened this year and are already being visited by thousands of visitors. (more…)
