COMING SOON: HELSINKI BEYOND DREAMS

For the past year or so, we have been busy with our forthcoming book.

Titled Helsinki Beyond Dreams, the book is about emerging local cultures and how they make a difference. We’ve invited a culturally varied group of urban activists, theorists and designers to share their views around the theme. We can’t wait to get all the inspiring stories and the rich photography out and published!

The book will be available in the spring 2012. It is also part of the official program of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012. Stay alert, more information will follow.

A FANTASTIC CAFE

Ihana Cafe is now open in the Kalasatama harbour in uptown Helsinki, and well worth a visit. The new container cafe celebrated its opening party last week, blessed with a warm evening sun, hot air balloons and crowds of relaxed people enjoying one of the first warm summer evenings this year in Helsinki. The place is a welcome, refreshing oasis in the middle of the harbour’s large asphalt planes, and like a small piece of Berlin in Helsinki. It is like its name promises: ‘Ihana’ meaning wonderful, lovely, or fantastic in Finnish. (more…)

CLUES TO OPEN HELSINKI

Tuula, Anni, Jenna, Sasha and Martti preparing for the brunch discussion

On Saturday 8th of May, I was invited to join an inspiring and tasty brunch hosted by Ok Do and Sitra. A group of people from different design disciplines, art, it, skateboarding and bicycling, sat around the table to discuss ideas for Helsinki’s coming year as World Design Capital 2012. The local delicacies were provided by Maatilatori.

The morning’s topic was, focusing on the main theme of the WDC 2012 year, how to contribute to a more ‘open Helsinki’. We talked about inspiring experiences from Helsinki and abroad, and also about issues that need developing in our city. (more…)

VANCOUVER: WORLD’S BEST CITY

Vancouver keeps its status as the World’s most liveable city 2010, according to Economist Intelligent Unit’s survey. The host city of this year’s Winter Olympics has kept its top ranking and same rating (98/100) since last year, just as Vienna, coming second with the rate of 97.9. Only two European cities have made their way into top ten – to our delight, Helsinki celebrates the 6th position. All the rest of the top ten cities are from Canada and Australia.
The Economist Intelligence Unit’s liveability survey assesses living conditions in 140 cities around the world. A rating of relative comfort for 30 indicators is assigned across five broad categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure. The survey gives an overall rating of 0-100, where 1 is intolerable and 100 is ideal.
