SOMETHING ELSE

“What if we, ordinary people, could decide what kinds of messages we see on a bus stop, for a change”. This was the idea of Elissa Eriksson, art education student who became tired of the overload of commercial messages in public space. Last December, she started a Facebook campaign, called “Haluan nähdä muutakin/ I want to see something else” to free some space from bus stop advertisements.

Elissa describes how her idea was born, last November: “I was waiting for a tram, thinking about my master’s thesis, which discusses the possibilities of ordinary people to participate legally in shaping their urban environment. Watching the advertisements at the tram stop, it occurred to me that you could comment on them from within the structures. I thought that I could possibly gather a group of friends to rent one tram stop.” (more…)

The person behind this urban artwork, Elissa, does not want to reveal her full name, pointing out that “anonymity is an exquisite feature of urban art”. (more…)

This is only a small selection of different decoration styles and ideas I spotted on a recent weekend promenade along the streets of the New York´s BoCoCa district in Brooklyn (Boerum Hill – Cobbel Hill – Carrol Gardens). (more…)

PLAYGROUND FOR ALL AGES

During the unusually warm summer of 2010, we have done some rather frequent bicycle trips to Kalasatama, to take care of our urban farm. At the same time, we had the chance to observe the urban life that has evolved around the harbour little by little, since the area was officially opened for the public in June 2010. It seems that the vast open areas in Kalasatama have opened up a totally new possibility for the people of Helsinki to enjoy the city, each in their own way. The place is like a big playground for people of all ages, manifesting a new culture of freedom – with a lot of space for creativity  and new perspectives to what you can do in the city. (more…)
