KALASATAMA WATERFRONT COMES ALIVE

The city of Helsinki will soon open a new pedestrian + cycling path along the waterfront of the Kalasatama harbour. The route opens officially on Saturday 12 June, celebrating also the official Helsinki day. The path itself will be worth visiting, due to its exceptional atmosphere and views to the city centre. But on 12 June, the whole harbour comes alive with all kinds of events. (more…)

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF NYC / HKI

I found this link through a friend, saying: “This one is toooo nice”. I cannot but agree. ”The Sandpit” is a new miniature film by Sam O’Hare, picturing a day in the life of New York City. The film is shot as a series of still photographs – a total of over 35,000 photos have been taken from NY rooftops, penthouse and balconies. The film is inspired by time-lapse tilt shift photography and films like Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio. THE UNKNOWN CITY

Kalasatama, the former harbor area in uptown Helsinki, used to be an unknown part of the city but is now open for people. Students of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts have utilised of the great potential of the vast unused area and its enchantment in winter darkness. The outdoor exhibition “Tuntematon Kaupunki – Unknown City” gathered people for a chilly evening walk around the windy asphalt planes this Tuesday evening. Sound, video and spatial installations scattered around the area offer new discoveries, but also the vast harbor itself with its lights and strange, unused objects, is full of magic. (more…)

SUBURBAN DREAMS

A tip for an excursion into Helsinki suburbs: Take the local train (or bike) northward and go visit the library of Tapulikaupunki. At this local library currently under threat of abolishment, an exhibition presents art made by local teenagers, under the theme “What already exists in our neighborhood and what is lacking there”. The exhibition is a product of a youth art workshop organised by the Suburban Project by Helsinki City together with artist Karri Kuoppala and graphic designer / architect Tuomas Siitonen; both also former specialists in street art.
